Scythe Upgrades

I love playing Scythe and have started a collection of things to print to upgrade my game.  Like I did with my Gloomhaven list, here's the models that I made myself:

Armory
Mine
Monument
Windmill
Power Token
Popularity Token
Victory Token

I finally got around to painting a bunch of these!  Here's some photos:

      I have considered it, but I don't think that I could do it at an affordable price point. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I calculated that I'd need to charge something like $10 or $15 per faction (for the 4 buildings, 6 stars, popularity and power tokens), unpainted. Then there's the shipping costs and difficulties as well (the windmill and armory both have some very small and delicate parts). So, I don't know how much of a market there'd be for something so expensive. Another consideration is that I don't have much free time these days and would prefer to spend it designing new models rather than manufacturing/selling them.

      What I really need is to find someone who wants to become an authorized reseller and work out a deal with them. Unfortunately, most people doing commercial 3D printing don't want to touch models that require as much support & post printing processing as my models do.

      Well damn.

      If I had a 3d printer I would do that deal with you, love making and painting models and loved your models as they really do add something to the game, plus I am sure if they were printed, polished up and painted then people would pay good money for them.

      Thanks - let me know if you ever decide to take the plunge and get a printer. In the meanwhile, it's totally fine if you want to take the files to a library or a commercial printer or something and print yourself a copy of them. The non-commercial flag on the license just means that people can't sell them as a finished product on Ebay or Etsy or something.

    These are great! I'm printing the structures. Rather than using gray and painting them, I'm using one color for each faction. I fortunately have all colors but one. Can't say more ;)

How Much Filament Do I Have Left

As I approached the end of another roll of filament, I asked myself, "how much filament do I have left?"  I was getting ready to leave for work and didn't want the printer sitting idle all day with a half-finished print sitting on the bed, but I also didn't want to just put on a new roll and waste a bunch of perfectly good filament.  What to do?  Well, the answer was obvious, hit Google! Prusa MK3 Stringing at .05 mm Layer Height Resolved!

I've had a Prusa MK3 for several weeks and have printed nearly a kilogram of upgrades for my boardgames.  Most of that has been terrain features, which have printed beautifully at 0.1 mm layer height (check out the things I've made for some examples).  Sure, the print lines are visible (especially after applying a wash), but I'm still very happy with the results.  I haven't been so happy with attempts at printing miniatures at 0.05 mm layer height. I was vexed to find that 0.05 mm layer height prints on my brand new printer looked like garbage.  They were so covered with strings that I couldn't even remove the support material.  Admittedly, they'd be pretty awesome if I exclusively played campaigns in the Mirkwood, but that's really not what I'm going for. Making Meshmixer Supports

I've written tidbits of this information across a few other support-related posts, but I figured that I should put it all in one place.  I've been printing a lot of minis lately, which has meant that I've had to learn a lot about supports and 3D printing.  I use a Prusa MK3, so this post is focused on FDM supports.  I tried a lot of different support structures across several different programs and my favorite ones were tree supports in Meshmixer.  I know many others have had excellent results with other supports, but I've been happy with my results and so that's what I'm going to write about :P Generating tree supports via Meshmixer is a 2 phase process.  First, you've got to figure out your print's orientation, and second, you've got to figure out your actual supports.  For minis, that first step can be a difficult balancing act, as you probably don't want supports to connect to the most detailed parts of the mini (like its face).  You also h...
